EXCLUSIVE | M.I.A Vs Diplo

Got some unexpected tweets from Diplo after mentioning a song from the new album. I got very excited as you can imagine. Loved his production on Arular, his remixes and that excellent Fabric mix he did a few years ago.

Anyway after a few messages I found out him and M.I.A have had a massive falling out. This is our conversation...

ME: That track Muscle is amazing. Big up @diplo 's production.

DIPLO: Whoa did the record leak?

ME: I heard it at @xlrecordings Love Muscle. She seemed surprised you had heard the finished album though, during my @mtvuk interview!

DIPLO: yes she is surprised, but i got as many crew at interscope... she didnt want to put any of my records on it like last time :(

ME: Muscle was the best thing I heard on the album. Nice dub Sandanista vibe. She did use the word 'warring' in relation to you and her.

DIPLO: Awe thats sweet

ME: Asked by me about Muscle (during the int') she didn't mention you but said: "if you’re going to do it anything interesting with the vocal BlaqStar was the guy. He’s the inventor of chopping you up to death vocally. He can make music out of anything."

DIPLO: She (m.i.a) will do anything to discredit me + throw a lil blaqstar in there (an artist she stole from MadDecent) for extra punch

I know nothing about this song. But it is sublime.

M.I.A Returns

One of the most important artists of the last decade releases her new album this summer. And soon after quotes given to Rolling Stone and NME were put out she leaked this song called THERES SPACE FOR OL DAT I SEE.

It shows that just when you think you know M.I.A's sound she switches things up. The Sri-Lankan born London raised lady is working again with Diplo, Switch and Blaqstarr on the disc. Find out more in this story that some guy wrote here

Mad Decent With Diplo

This year i've seen some good DJ sets. 2ManyDjs at Snowbombing reminded me how good the Belgian duo are. Benga Vs Skream in Berlin was special. The Count and Sinden killed it at the Camden Crawl.

But Diplo @ Bugged Out (and IN some car park) was unbelievably banging. Though he started with his tradmark Baille funk house sound the Baltimore boy swerved from the that path early on- playing a version of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Obviously he laid an M.I.A acapella on the top too.

Here are two highlights. This Booka Shade tune was played with the opening lines of N.E.R.D's Everybody Nose over the top. "All the girls standing in the line" etc...



And this was part of the hip hop finale. It's Diplo's own production for M.I.A with a sample of The Clash's Straight To Hell playing a key role. The pair wrote it to send up commercial hip hop- those gunshots and till registers in the chorus give it away. Yet the track was nominated for Best Song at the Grammys. This is the remix...

Remix of the year already?

Had a root around Hype Machine recently and as usual there are some great remixes on there. Check the Herve dubstep remix of Lily Allen's The Fear and Diplo's version of Britney's Circus.

The best though is A Trak's restrained take on Sebastian Tellier's latest single. It's string-tastic. Also below is (probably) my favourite Diplo remix which doesn't feature on his decent new album.
